18th Annual High School Art
Exhibition Elements of principle and Design
March 27 – May 22, 2022
The Tyler Museum of art is presenting the 18th Annual
High School Art Exhibition -Elements of principle and design. It opened on
March 27 and runs through May 22, 2022. The high school art exhibit was started
in 2005 for artists in nearby East Texas highs schools enrolled in eleventh and
twelfth grades.
This is an opportunity for these up-and-coming artists to
be a part of a professionally curated show. It gives these young artists a
glance into the professional art world and a chance to show their originality.
The Ellis Family Foundation made this exhibition attainable through generous
donations. For this exhibition, there are two different award ceremonies. The first is a juried award ceremony that was
held on March 27th,2022 [1] The later ceremony will be conducted on May
22, 2022, it is a People’s Choice Award but ballots must be cast by May the
21st. The juried awards are based on
the elements of design in the artworks.
This exhibition is designed to examine the artworks through criteria
written by Hannah Cammack a high school intern from the Tyler Museum of Art. It
is edited by the Museums Arts Education Manager, Racheal Antony. [2] The mission of this museum
is art, education, and family. The museum has spacious parking and a gift shop.
It is located on the Tyler Junior college campus, so it is very
accessible.
This exhibition holds eighty-six works from sixteen
different schools across East Texas. [3] The museum is not a
typical white box rectangular setting. Inside the exhibit, the gallery walls
are soft dove gray with a dark gray carpeted floor. When you look up it has
dark ceilings with a vast amount of track lighting. The exhibition includes
many different mediums on canvas, and paper, it also includes many
Three-dimensional sculptures. The exhibition has benches available so you can
visit the artwork. The benches, pedestals, and any picture frames are made of
all-natural wood. The framed pictures have off-white matting. This is an
important aspect of bringing together this exhibition and must not be
overlooked. These accents help bring the show a unified and professional look
and do not take away from the high school students’ artworks.
The exhibition is
staged so that the first thing you see is the exhibition poster hanging
directly in front of you. Then, in large
bold font in yellow and orange, it states the name of the exhibition and the
dates and times that it can be seen by the public. The opening to the gallery
space is to the right of the sign, and you can catch just a glimpse of color.
This is intriguing and inviting. The
first wall on your right is lined with a general gallery-style hanging. There
are nine images hung from door to corner. Out of these nine images, four of
them have won awards. There are four award-winning pieces but there is one that
is very striking. It is large charcoal and graphite drawing by Jaden Scott. The
dimensions are; 30x32 inches. The piece is called Edification of Destiny
created in 2022. This piece is a
portrait of a young African American girl. She looks to be around the age of
sixteen. The portrait has a night sky in the background. Around the portrait of
the female, there is a halo of light. The young girl is facing the viewer with
her head cocked and only can be viewed from the shoulders up. The artist’s
techniques of bold contrast affect the entire picture plane. This effect is called chiaroscuro and
illuminates the work. This piece stood out on entering the show.
Turning the corner to the left the viewer can
see the adjoining wall and the middle of the gallery. The middle was lined with four pedestals that
ran parallel to the sidewall. Each Pedestal has a group of four sculptures on
top of them. Each piece is made by different artists. The piece that was
attention-grabbing was a very large sphere spray painted in colors and shades
symbolic of the planet earth. Coming out of this sphere were four hands cast in
plaster and painted with black acrylic. Each hand was signing a letter that
spelled out the word deaf in sign language. This piece was very moving. It was
well crafted and seamless. It was 26 inches from base to top and 20 inches
wide. The piece’s name was Deaf World made in 2022. The artist behind
the piece is a 12th-grade student, Jennifer Lopez Estrada. This piece is in
reference to the deaf community being left out of the art world. A very
riveting piece for anyone, especially a 12th grader.
As you proceed through the gallery to the next wall, one
can catch a bright burst of red. On this wall, there are twenty-one pieces. The
piece in the middle stood out because of the vibrant colors. This piece was
created by Ashlie Cifuentes. The piece is a digital artwork called Insanity
from 2022 its dimensions are 40x30 inches.
It is a portrait of a female with half a face digitally formed in
vibrant red and surreally demonic. The other half is humanistic. The background
of the piece was in muted tones of purple with black lightning symbolic of a
storm. This piece was one of the most
vibrant in the exhibit.
In viewing the
gallery there were quite a few charcoals and graphite drawings as well as
paintings. One might notice the hanging style of the exhibition changed on the
back wall. The pieces were very similar in size and hung in parallel rows. In
speaking to the desk operator upon entering, it was mentioned the different
hanging styles were to accommodate all the pieces chosen for the show.
In the middle of the back wall, one could see a purple
ribbon next to a large piece that was in the center. The frames on this wall
were all 8x10 inches, except this one. This piece was 11x17 inches titled K-9
Intelligence made in 2022. It was created by Sadie Scroggins and the medium
is colored pencils. The piece is of an
Alaskan Husky lying on the floor. The artist’s explanation of the work is that
she renders things from her memories, and projects them onto paper. She finds
joy in this. K-9 Intelligence is rendered photo-realistically. This is
one of the last pieces in the exhibition.
This concludes This exhibition. The 18th Annual High
School Art Exhibition- Elements of principle and Design at the Tyler Museum
of Art is inspiring and surprising. It is so amazing to see the talent and
dedication to art from high schoolers from across East Texas. If you have not
seen this exhibit, there is still time. This exhibition is well-curated and
beautifully unified. It is great to see a gallery of this stature holding a
high school exhibition. It will help them envision a future in professional
art.
